Edmonton Event Photographers – Dancing for the Kids

For the past couple of years, Sarah and I have been providing photography for the Dancing for the Kids event which is supporting The Boys & Girls Clubs of Edmonton and the Rotary Club of Edmonton Sunrise this year. This annual event pairs local celebrities with professional dancers for a night of ballroom dance competition based on the popular television show Dancing with the Stars. Past winners of this event have included Darryl McIntyre and Marni Kuhlmann from CFRN. This year’s celebrities include:

The event will be held on November 19th, 2010 at the Shaw Conference Center in downtown Edmonton. Leading up to the event, I had the chance to visit Elite Dance Studios to photograph Kari Skelton and her partner Dominic Lacroix as they practiced their routine. For those of you who don’t know Kari, she is the beautiful co-host of the morning show on Capital FM with Rob and Audie. Kari recently appeared in Avenue magazine and is actively involved in several community events and charities along with her husband Ryan Jespersen from Breakfast Television on CityTV.

Concert Moment – Wil

On Wednesday night, Sarah and I had the pleasure of seeing Wil Mimnaugh in concert for the 4th time. We first discovered Wil about 4 years ago when he opened up at the Starlite Room for Matt Good. His energy and raw talent is expressed through his music. His website is www.ibreakstrings.com and when you see him play you understand how appropriate that title is. He plays with a passion and energy like no other performer I’ve seen and in my opinion he is one of the best guitar players I have ever seen play live. If you ever get the chance to see him live you should definitely go check him out. In the meantime you should definitely pick up his latest album By December on iTunes.

We captured some great photos of Wil’s performance and I also took the opportunity to experiment with adding some video into the mix using my Canon 5D Mark II. The audio quality isn’t too bad considering I was just using the on-board microphone on the camera but eventually I plan to acquire an external microphone to improve the audio quality. Wedding Moment – Best Entrance Ever

I’m sure everyone by now has seen this video on YouTube of the couple who made a grand entrance at their wedding by dancing down the isle to Chris Brown’s ‘Forever’. Not surprisingly there were some people who commented on the video who didn’t feel this was appropriate in a church setting. I personally thought it was fantastic but I can understand it not being some people’s cup of tea. Whether you agree with the way they made their entrance or not, there is no denying that if this the way they are starting off their lives together I suspect they are in for a great life filled with a lot of fun. If you are a fun couple like these two, I’d love to photograph your wedding and share in your joy.

Another great video that makes me smile is this music video set to Queen’s ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ and it features not only the wedding party but also their guests. How much fun would it have been to attend this wedding?

Jazz Man – New York City

Back in March, Sarah and I visited New York after attending Photoshop World in Boston. This was my fourth trip to Manhattan and Sarah’s 2nd so we’d seen most of the major tourist spots. This allowed us to relax a bit more and just take in the city without worrying about rushing to the next must see location. It was also a great opportunity for some photography and to try out the video capabilities of the new Canon 5D Mark II. On a beautiful Monday afternoon while we were strolling through Central Park, we happened upon this man playing his saxophone under a bridge in Central Park and I just couldn’t resist shooting some video and taking some still shots. Hope you enjoy them!
