Delux Burger Celebrity Chef – Buck Kendall

Fall has arrived and the start of October brings us another new Delux Burger Celebrity Chef. This month’s chef was selected when his burger was chosen as the winning entry in 96.3 Capital FM’s Best Burger contest. His name is Buck Kendall and his winning burger is called “Big Bucks Alberta Beef Burger”. It features a 7oz Alberta Beef patty, filled with bacon, sharp cheddar, black olives, green peppers, and salsa on a bed of lettuce with tomatoes, caramelized onions, and chipotle mayo. $1 from every one of Buck’s burgers that is sold will go to support the Canadian Diabetes association.

I met up with Buck at the Delux Burger location in West Edmonton Mall for his photoshoot and he was very excited to have had his burger selected as the winning entry. Buck had a great smile and a lot of character in his face which I wanted to make sure I captured in the photograph. I lit this with two 580 EXII speedlights. One was used as a main light with a shoot through umbrella and the second one was placed to camera right to provide a bit of a rim light to separate him from the background. I also selected a fairly shallow depth of field to soften the background and reduce any distractions. Here are a couple of photos from our shoot along with the final ad copy:

Delux Burger Celebrity Chefs – Rob & Audie from Capital FM

Where did the summer go? It’s hard to believe but September is here and with the start of a new month hastens in another new Delux Burger Celebrity Chef or Chefs in this case. For September, your Celebrity Chefs are Rob & Audie – co-hosts of the morning show on 96.3 Capital FM. I grew up listening to Rob & Audie in the mornings when they were on 630 Ched back in the 80’s so it was nice to finally meet the two guys who got my mornings started back when I was in junior high and high school.

For the month of September, cows across the province can breathe a sigh of relief as their burger – ‘The Rob & Audie Bison Big Bite Burger’, features a 7oz Bison sirloin patty. This delicious cut of meat is topped with grilled portabella mushrooms, melted mozzarella, sun dried tomato mayo, and all the groceries on a fresh baked bun. In keeping with helping out great causes, $1 from every burger sold will go towards the Make-A-Wish Northern Alberta Canada.

Delux Burger Celebrity Chef – Jacqueline Greenly

It’s August and that means two things. The first is wondering where July went? The second is that it is time for a new Delux Burger Celebrity Chef. This month I had the pleasure of photographing the lovely Jacqueline Greenly from Shaw TV. A former model who has traveled the world, Jacqueline also sits on the board for Development Society for the Valley Zoo but her love of animals doesn’t stop her from enjoying a good burger every once and awhile (sorry cows).

Jacqueline’s burger is appropriately named the ‘Jack’ Burger and features a 7oz Alberta beef patty, Monterey Jack cheese, double-smoked bacon, banana peppers, Jack Daniels BBQ sauce, chipotle mayo, and lettuce on a whole wheat bun. Drop by either location of Delux Burger during the month of August to enjoy her delicious burger and $1 from each burger sold will go to support the Valley Zoo Development Society.

Jason Strudwick & Leila Zuniga – July’s Delux Burger Celebrity Chefs

July is finally here and the start of a new month brings us a new Delux Burger Celebrity Chef – or in this case Chefs. I had the opportunity to photograph this month’s Celebrity Chefs who are Jason Strudwick from the Edmonton Oilers and Leila Zuniga from Andrew Peller Ltd. Their burger is called the ’43rd and Wine’ and is comprised of a 7 oz blackened sirloin burger, sauteed mushrooms, double smoked bacon, carmelized onions, BBQ mayo, and all the groceries, atop a kaiser bun. $1 from every burger sold will be donated in support of Jason and Leila’s charity – the Edmonton Inner City Children’s Project (ICCP). Stop by either location of Delux Burger during the month of July to try their burger and support another great charity.

Leila and Jason were naturals in front of the camera and this was the first shoot that I got to bust out my Vagabond Mini Lithium battery pack and bring my full strobes on location. It was also nice seeing Jason’s new baby named Kane and Jason’s wife Schoena who I had photographed back in 2008 at the Dancing for the Kids event. For this particular series of photographs, I was shooting from out in the mall back into the restaurant and didn’t have room to setup the full strobe so I setup a couple of 580 EXIIs and triggered them with PocketWizards. Here are a few photographs from our shoot along with a sample of the finished POS product that will be used in-store.

Delux Burger Celebrity Chef – Tina Carson

Spring has finally arrived in Edmonton after a long and cold winter and what better way to celebrate it’s arrival than with a ‘Spring Fling’ burger at Delux Burger Bar. This month’s burger was created by Celebrity Chef Tina Carson who is the District Manager of On-Premise for Corby Distilleries – distributors of fine spirits such as Absolut Vodka. Her burger is a 6 oz lean turkey burger topped with thinly sliced prosciutto, apple-cranberry compote, melted brie, fresh spinach, and grainy mustard aioli on whole wheat flat bread. As if that flavor combination wasn’t reason enough to try out Tina’s burger, $1 from every burger sold will go to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

We setup again at the West Edmonton Mall location for Tina’s photo shoot and decided since she works for Corby Distilleries, we would try to incorporate the wine rack near the bar into the background. For this photo shoot I was able to light Tina using my new Firefly octagon softbox which is a lightweight and portable softbox that you can use with a small flash unit. It’s a great portable solution that is quick and easy to setup and allows you to work fast in tight locations while still providing beautiful soft light similar to what you’d get working with a full size studio strobe and traditional softbox.
