  • Edmonton Event Photography – Dawna Friesen Visits Global TV

Last week I had the opportunity to cover a story for the Edmontonians and photographed Dawna Friesen – the new anchor for Global National. Ms. Friesen was in Edmonton as part of a national tour to meet with each of the local Global TV studios across Canada. While she was in Edmonton, she shot some promo spots with Lynda Steele and Gord Steinke and I was able to join them on the set and capture a few still photos while they were filming the spots. Most of the time when I’m photographing people, whether it be for a wedding or covering an event, lighting always seems to be an issue so it’s nice when you get to shoot in an environment like a television studio where the lighting is all setup for you. The biggest challenge with this assignment was time. With a full schedule of meetings and only an hour or so before the first newscast of the evening, Dawna, Lynda, and Gord were only on the set for a few takes before having to get on with the rest of their day so I had to make sure I got the shot quickly. Here are a few photos from the shoot.

Afterward, there was a reception in the Global Edmonton offices where Dawna got to meet the staff who work at Global Edmonton. Dawna is from Manitoba originally but has been working for NBC for the past eleven years as a foreign correspondent and anchor based in London. She has covered stories around the world including the war in Iraq & Afghanistan, every British election in the past 10 years, and most recently covered the Winter Olympics in Vancouver and won an Emmy for her part in the coverage of the night Barack Obama was elected President.

You can watch Dawna weeknights on Global National at 5:30 starting September 20th.

  • Edmonton Event Photography – Indy Party at Century Grill

Edmonton event photographer Bruce Clarke was on location at the Century Grill on July 24th, 2010 to provide photography coverage of the 2010 Red Bull Indy Party. Traditionally this party has been ‘the’ place to be on Indy weekend and this night proved no different with hundreds of people coming out to celebrate the 2010 Indy race in Edmonton. The parking lot was filled with beautiful cars and the restaurant and patios were filled with beautiful people. Here is a recap of the evening’s festivities with photographs and video.

If you are having an event in Edmonton or beyond and are looking to book a photographer who can provide a mixture of photography and video coverage, be sure to contact me for a quote. • Event Moment – JA Alberta Business Hall of Fame

Last Thursday, I was invited by my friend and fellow photographer, Javier Salazar, to photograph the Junior Achievement Alberta Business Hall of Fame gala which was held at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. This year marked the 30th anniversary of this event which was launchedto identify and honor the lifetime achievements of Alberta’s most outstanding individuals who have helped shape our province through their business success, entrepreneurial spirit and philanthropic contributions serving as role models for society.” This year’s inductees included: Bill Fountain, John Hokanson, and Larry Anderson.

As a former participant in Junior Achievement, I was delighted to see how much the program has grown and that the interest amoung students, educators, and the business community in Edmonton remains strong. It seems like a lifetime ago that I served as the company president and treasurer for JA-Mart – our little upstart company which designed and sold re-usable lunch bags long before the environmental movement had even gotten off the ground. During the evening’s event, over 150 JA participants got up on stage  to share what JA meant to them and I started reflecting back on some of the great business lessons that JA taught me and what a great feeling it was to reconnect with JA again but this time as a small business owner. It was great to see so many young people learning about how to start and run a small business and equally as great to see the support they receive from the local business community. If you are interested in getting involved with Junior Achievement, they are always looking for volunteers who are intersted in giving their time to work with young people to help them develop their entrepreneural skills. Be sure to check out their website if you are interested in getting involved with JA.

Here are some photos from the evening’s event.

  • Concert Moment – Wil & Matt Anderson

On Wednesday night, one of our favourite musicians was in town to play a show at the Myer Horowitz theater. His name is Wil and this show marks the fifth time we’ve seen him perform live. Last time Wil was in town, I shot some images for his website along with some video which you can read about here. This time around, Wil has a new album out and is performing with another talented musician Matt Anderson – the first Canadian to win the International Blues Festival. Although we’d never seen him perform before, Matt blew us away with his powerful voice, soulful lyrics and amazing guitar playing. You can learn more about Matt on his website at www.stubbyfingers.ca. If you ever have the opportunity to see either of these guys perform live you definitely don’t want to miss the opportunity.

I arranged to do some more concert photography for Wil and ended up getting some extra passes so we were so lucky to be able to introduce Wil’s music to the amazing photography duo of Rob & Lauren. If you haven’t checked out their work be sure and head over to their website to learn more about them. Both took turns doing some shooting and shared their thoughts and a few photos from the event on their blog.

Here are a few of my photos from Wil and Matt’s performances. I also shot some video which I’ll try to get posted up soon.

  • Event Moment – Century Grill 10th Birthday

Event Moment – Century Grill 10th Birthday

Last Saturday, Century Grill celebrated 10 years of grilling in Edmonton with a birthday celebration. It was also an opportunity to show off the newly relaunched Century Room. The new Century Room features a gorgeous interior and offers a relaxed, up-scale location on the south side to head out for casual drinks and great food. A great crowd of people came out to celebrate the relaunch and enjoyed a great house DJ, great food, and champagne with Red Bull. I was on hand to capture the evening’s festivals including a few video hilites. Here is a short video that I put together and some of the shots from the evening.
