  • Commercial Photography – Showhomes in Leduc

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of being invited to photograph some show homes by my friend Ben who’s wedding I photographed last year in Edmonton.  Ben works for MacLab Enterprises and they were looking for some updated photography of a few of the show homes in two of their newest developments in Leduc for their website. I headed out to the communities of Windrose and Suntree to meet with Ben and some of the builders to get a quick tour of their show homes and then set out to photograph each of the beautiful properties.

One of the challenges of photographing the interiors of homes is that you may not have complete control over the lighting conditions outside, particularly if you’re trying to photograph during certain times of day when there is limited traffic in the homes. On this particular day it was slightly overcast but still very bright outside so I had made the decision early-on to use HDR photography to help capture a wide range of detail and deal with the extreme difference between the shadows and the hilites in the scene. HDR photography involves photographing the exact same scene at a variety of exposures and then combining the images in the post production process to wind up with an image which features a wider dynamic range than what you could normally capture in a single frame. The process of tone-mapping is achieved by using a program such as HDR Effex Pro from Nik Software which helps combine the multiple images together to form the final image.

Here are a few selected images from our photography session in Leduc.

  • Delux Burger Celebrity Chef – Garner Andrews

It’s April and this month’s celebrity chef is no fool although he has been known to get involved in some Tom Foolery from time to time. This month’s Delux Burger Celebrity Chef is the host of the Garner Andrews Show on Sonic 102.9 – Garner Andrews! His creation is called the ‘Garnivore’ and features a 7oz Cajun rubbed Alberta sirloin, 3 strips of double-smoked bacon, carmelized onions, creamy blue cheese ranch, lettuce,  & tomato on a sesame seed bun.

With summer approaching (maybe), each Garnivore burger will come with a limited edition pair of Sonic sunglasses – just like the kind Tom Cruise wore in Risky Business only they are not Raybans and they are a bit more colorful.

If that wasn’t reason enough to stop in and try out Garner’s creation, $1 from each burger sold will also be donated to the Youth Emergency Shelter Society (YESS)  – giving youth at risk a chance by offering a safe haven and valuable programs and education. Garner’s burger is available until the end of April so head on down to either location of Delux and try out his manly creation.

Here are a few photographs from my shoot with Garner last week. I was able to photograph Garner and turn around the photographs to the creative team in less than 8 hours so if you’re looking for a fast turnaround time for your next commercial photography project, be sure to get in touch with me to discuss the details.

  • Delux Burger Celebrity Chef – Brad Gamble

They say if March enters like a lion it will leave like a lamb but what if it enters as a delicious piece of deep fried chicken? It’s the start of a new month and that means another new Delux Burger Celebrity Chef! This month’s Celebrity Chef is Brad Gamble who is the on-site sales representative for Sleeman’s Brewery. Brad’s burger is called the ‘Gambler’ and features a honey glazed chicken breast, deep fried in a cajun batter, topped with jalepeno javarti and onions which have been grilled in Sleeman’s Honey Brown ale. Throw in a a nice ripe tomato and lettuce on a fresh bun and you’ve got a burger that will have Col. Sanders running for the hills. Be sure to drop into either location of Delux Burger to try out Brad’s burger throughout the month of March.

Since Brad represents Sleemans, for this shoot I thought it would be great if we could find a way to incorporate the beer taps from the bar at Delux. After we rearranged things behind the bar a bit we were able to find a great spot to shoot in and use some of the late afternoon natural window light. I added in a 580EX II  just to Brad’s left for a little additional fill and triggered them using the PocketWizard miniTT1 and TT5 devices. Here are some of the photographs from our commercial shoot at the Crestwood location.

Brad will have to work hard if he’s going to beat the new sales record which was set last month by Nicola Crosbie of Global TV. In just one month, 2074 Nicola Burgers were sold which more than tripled the previous record. In doing so, Nicola helped to raise close to $2100 for the Edmonton Eskimo Woman’s Ovarian Cancer Research Endowment Fund. Check out the article on her accomplishment which was featured along with my photography in the Edmonton Journal.  Missed any of the previous Delux Burger Celebrity Chefs? • Delux Burger Celebrity Chef – Nicola Crosbie

It’s the start of another new month and that means another new Delux Burger Celebrity Chef. For the month of February, the celebrity chef is Global Edmonton’s chief meteorologist Nicola Crosbie. We met up with Nicola at the Delux location in WEM and had a great time working together. Nicola is used to being in front of the camera and was a lot of fun to photograph. She has a beautiful smile and was very relaxed during our brief time together so we were able to get some nice relaxed images in just a short time. With her busy schedule we only had a few minutes to get the shots we needed so I had to make sure I was setup and ready to go when she arrived.

Nicola’s burger is called the “Nicola Burger” and features a 6 oz Alberta beef patty, creamy cambozola, crispy pancetta, baby arugla, black current mayo, and it’s served on whole wheat flat bread. $1 from every burger sold will be donated to support the Edmonton Eskimo Women’s Ovarian Cancer Research Endowment fund so be sure to stop by either location of Delux Burger in Edmonton and try out Nicola’s burger. You’ll enjoy a delicious burger and be supporting a great cause at the same time.

It’s the start of a new year and new month so that means it’s time for a new Celebrity Chef at Delux Burger Bar in Edmonton. For the month of January, beat the winter cold with a spicy Mexican-inspired burger from Celebrity Chef Krista Castellarin. Krista is the owner of Fabulous Furballs which specializes in stocking unique brands of pet products that are hard to find in Canada. Fabulous Furballs also provides spa and grooming services to help make your pet look ‘fabulous’. Krista also starred in Season 2 of Animal Planet’s show – Groomer Has It. Krista is originally from Las Vegas and has brought the glitz and glam of Sin City to help bring a sense of style to Edmonton’s four legged friends.

Krista’s burger is called the “Fabulous Fiesta Burger” and features a 6 oz. Cajun rubbed Alberta beef patty, jalapeno Havarti, salsa, butter lettuce, fresh sliced avocado, and chipotle mayo on a fresh baked kaiser bun. Be sure to stop by either location of Delux Burger to try Krista’s burger during the month of January.

For the past couple of shoots, we’ve been using an alcove at the Delux location in West Edmonton Mall as our backdrop but this time we decided to switch things up a bit and go for a little more glam. I looked around for another location to use and decided to try using the beautiful blue velvet curtains at the back of the restaurant as our backdrop. It was lit with a single 580 EX II with a shoot-through umbrella triggered by Pocket Wizards. When photographing commercial work I try to shoot a mixture of vertical and horizontal shots leaving lots of space for ad copy so that the art director has numerous options to work with when doing her layout of the point-of-purchase and other materials. Below is a copy of the final marketing piece along with a few shots from my session with Krista.
